May 3 is the anniversary of the death in 1895 of JOHN CAMERON. He was born in Hancock County, Virginia between 1805 and 1819 according to various census records and specifically, on 12 Nov 1805 if I have found the correct headstone for him. He was living in Augusta, Carroll County, Ohio in 1850; in Wayne, Jones County, Iowa in 1860 and 1870; in Canton, Benton County Iowa in 1880; and I believe he was living with his son, Henry, in Benton, Davies County Missouri at the time of his death in 1895. His wife was Elizabeth and he may have had two wives of the same name. Elizabeth Williams is named as the mother of at least three of his children – Oda, Catherine and Henry and based upon her birth place of New Jersey, she is probably the mother of our ancestor JAMES. However, Elizabeth Tillison or Tillotson is found in the marriage records of Carroll County, Ohio. His father was probably also named John and probably born in either Virginia or Pennsylvania.
JOHN CAMERON was the father of 15 children – William, George, JAMES (Cherie’s ancestor), Susan, Nancy, Henry Chalmer (might be a clue to his or his wife’s mother’s maiden name), Catherine, John, Eliza, Oderena (Oda or Ode,) Mary Zeralda, Nathan, John, Elizabeth and Thomas. This is not the correct birth order. Note that “Chalmer” and “Cameron” both mean “room.”
Additional research would be helpful on all children to properly identify John Cameron’s wife or wives.
